Reduce habitual throat clearing by using a voice-saving alternative

When to use this goal

For students whose voice plan identifies habitual throat clearing or coughing (not caused by current illness) as a behavior that irritates the vocal folds. The student replaces it with a sip of water, a hard swallow, or a silent cough. Base the choice on the voice evaluation following a medical evaluation.

Baseline
Count throat clears and coughs across at least three 30-minute periods on days the student is well. Note what tends to precede them (talking a lot, dry air, allergies). Confirm with the medical evaluation that the habit is not from reflux, allergies, or illness needing treatment.
Tips
Count each audible throat clear or cough as one episode. Do not count on days with a cold or active allergy symptoms; note those days. Teach and reinforce the alternative every time, and make water accessible in class. Share the plan with the teacher and family.
Limits
Throat clearing has medical causes that a school goal cannot address; voice therapy goals follow a medical (ENT or laryngology) evaluation and the template does not diagnose. Counts vary with health and environment, so look at trends. Observers may miss quiet episodes.

Criterion

Number of times a defined behavior occurs during a set observation period.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Keep every observation the same length.

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a 30-minute class period with a water bottle available, the student will reduce clearing their throat or coughing audibly (habitual, not illness-related) to no more than 3 times per 30-minute period, with a water bottle on the desk and a visual reminder card, across 3 consecutive observed periods, as measured by frequency recording collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 12 times per 30-minute period.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Voice.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
