Keep voicing clear and continuous through sentences and reading
When to use this goal
For students whose voice plan targets a weak, breathy, or breaking voice (voicing that fades, cuts out, or stays breathy), often after a medical finding such as reduced vocal fold closure. The target is clear, continuous voicing. Base the choice on the medical and voice evaluations.
- Baseline
- Record 20 words, 10 sentences, and a paragraph and mark each item for breathiness, voice breaks, or fading at the end. Note whether voicing weakens as the session goes on, which points to fatigue. Confirm the medical evaluation and any medical treatment plan before setting the goal.
- Tips
- Score an item correct when voicing stays clear and continuous throughout, by the voice plan's definition. Record which part of the item broke down (start, middle, end). Keep sessions short if the voice fatigues. Move to conversation and class with sl-voi-001 and sl-voi-002.
- Limits
- Clear voicing may be limited by the medical condition; targets should match what the medical team expects. Perceptual scoring needs the same listener. Voice therapy goals follow a medical (ENT or laryngology) evaluation.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 sentences of 6 to 8 words to read or repeat, the student will produce each item with clear, continuous voicing and no voice breaks independently with at least 85% accuracy on items produced with clear, continuous voicing, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Voice.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
