Say a full sentence on one breath with a breath at each phrase
When to use this goal
For students whose voice plan targets breath support: running out of air mid-sentence, speaking on residual air, or taking breaths in odd places. The target is coordinating breaths with phrases. Base the choice on the medical and voice evaluations.
- Baseline
- Record 20 sentences and a paragraph and mark where breaths occur and where the voice fades. Count the longest phrase the student produces comfortably on one breath; that sets the first sentence length. Coordinate with the medical team and, where relevant, the school nurse about respiratory conditions.
- Tips
- Score a sentence correct when it is finished with steady voicing and breaths occur only at phrase boundaries. Adjust sentence length to the student. Relaxed abdominal breathing can be modeled, but this template scores the spoken result, not a breathing exercise. Useful for students in choir or drama as well as voice plans.
- Limits
- Breath support depends on physical factors a school goal cannot change; targets should follow the medical team's expectations. Perceptual scoring needs the same listener. Voice therapy goals follow a medical (ENT or laryngology) evaluation.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 sentences of 8 to 10 words to read or repeat, the student will independently say each sentence on one breath without running out of air before the end with at least 85% accuracy on sentences produced with planned breaths, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Voice.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
