Project the voice to be heard across the room without strain
When to use this goal
For students whose voice is too quiet to be heard in class or who get loud by straining. The target is a projected voice (more breath and resonance) rather than a pushed one. Base the choice on the SLP's voice evaluation. When quietness relates to hearing or anxiety, involve the audiologist or counselor.
- Baseline
- Have the student say 10 sentences to a listener across the room and record whether each was heard and whether strain was observed. A sound-level app gives a rough number to track. Ask teachers how often they ask the student to speak up and whether it happens more in certain classes.
- Tips
- Score a sentence correct when the distant listener hears every word and the SLP hears no strain. Teach projection as breath plus open mouth plus forward resonance, not pushing from the throat. Use a loudness app for feedback but score by ear. Pair with sl-voi-004 so the student matches loudness to the setting rather than always projecting.
- Limits
- Loudness judgments vary by room and listener; keep distance and room similar. A quiet voice can reflect anxiety, hearing, or a medical cause, which this goal does not address. Voice therapy goals follow a medical (ENT or laryngology) evaluation when a voice disorder is suspected.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 sentences to say to a listener across the therapy room (about 15 feet away), the student will independently project their voice so the listener across the room hears every word, without strain with at least 80% accuracy on sentences projected without strain, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Voice.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
