Produce pressure consonants without nasal air escape
When to use this goal
For students with audible nasal air escape on pressure sounds (p, b, t, d, k, g, s, z, sh, ch, j) where the medical team has found the cause is a learned pattern, not a structural gap, so therapy is indicated. Base the choice on the craniofacial or ENT team's plan.
- Baseline
- Probe 20 words per target sound and record nasal emission using a nasal mirror or listening tube. Note which sounds are affected; sound-specific emission (often /s/) is the most likely to respond to therapy. Confirm the medical team's finding that the pattern is learned before setting the goal.
- Tips
- Score correct when no nasal emission is heard or seen on the mirror. Target one sound at a time, starting with the one most responsive in baseline. Work closely with the medical team and report lack of progress, which can mean the cause is structural after all. Never use blowing or sucking exercises as the goal; the goal is speech.
- Limits
- If the cause is structural, therapy will not fix it and the goal should not be written; this is the medical team's call. Feedback tools help but perceptual judgment still varies.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 single-syllable words beginning with Blank to fill in: [target pressure consonant, e.g. /s/ or /p/], the student will produce the target pressure consonant with oral air and no nasal emission independently with at least 85% accuracy on pressure consonants produced without nasal emission, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Issue: Blanks filled in. 1 blank is still empty: [target pressure consonant]. Write in what this student will work on, such as the target sound or the strategy the team chose.
Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Voice.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
