Use the target resonance in reading and conversation
When to use this goal
For students accurate with resonance at the word and sentence level (sl-voi-017, sl-voi-018) who need carryover into reading and conversation. Base the choice on structured-task data and the medical team's plan.
- Baseline
- Record reading and conversation and rate the first 10 utterances for the target resonance. Compare with sentence-level data. Ask the teacher and family whether they notice a difference in different situations, such as when the student is tired or has a cold.
- Tips
- The first 10 utterances are the opportunities, scored correct when the resonance matches the plan for the whole utterance. Score from a recording. Illness and allergies change resonance, so note them and do not score on those days. Share progress with the medical team.
- Limits
- Perceptual ratings of resonance in running speech are the least reliable of all voice measures; use the same trained listener and recordings. Resonance goals apply only when the medical team has indicated therapy.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, while reading aloud a paragraph at their independent reading level, the student will speak with the target resonance (oral resonance on oral sounds, nasal on nasal sounds) throughout each utterance independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Voice.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
