Throw out expired or spoiled food
When to use this goal
For students who live, or will live, on their own and keep food past its date or eat food that looks or smells off. Needs reading dates or matching them to a calendar. Present levels decide fit, not grade.
- Baseline
- Use real items or clear photos with dates that are past, today, and future, plus a few with visible mold or a swollen package. Score each item; any spoiled item kept counts as an error.
- Tips
- Because eating spoiled food is a health risk, the target is every item. Teach that "best by" means quality, not safety, but that a student unsure of an item throws it out or asks.
- Limits
- This goal teaches a routine; it does not replace a fire, medical, or emergency plan written by the family, the nurse, or the program. Safety steps are scored as all-or-nothing, so the target is every step. Smell and texture checks vary by person; this goal relies on dates and visible signs.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
