Tidy a bedroom to match a photo

When to use this goal

For middle school students whose rooms stay cluttered because "clean your room" has no clear end point. A photo of the room when it is done gives the standard. Present levels decide fit, not grade.

Baseline
Run the routine on at least 3 separate days in the setting where it will be measured before setting a target. Mark each step as independent, prompted (note the prompt type), or not done, and count only independent steps. Note the steps missed most often; they usually need direct teaching, not just more practice. Take the done photo with the student so the standard is one they agree with.
Tips
Labeled bins with photos make the putting-away steps possible. The student's room is personal space; the standard should be the student's and family's, not a staff idea of tidy.
Limits
Home data depend on the family. A room with too much stuff and too little storage may need a decluttering plan before the goal is fair.

Number of routine steps performed independently.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

A routine is broken into ordered steps; each step is recorded as independent, supported, or not completed.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, in the student's bedroom at home, with a photo of the room when it is tidy, as recorded by the family, the student will tidy the bedroom until it matches the photo, performing at least 5 of 6 steps independently, on 3 of 4 observed weekends, as measured by a task-analysis checklist collected weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 6 steps independently.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Task-analysis steps fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Task-analysis checklist gives task-analysis steps data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Independent Living.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
