Schedule an appointment by phone
When to use this goal
For students who rely on a family member to make every appointment. Needs speaking on the phone or using a relay or text option; present levels in phone use decide fit, not grade. Students who use AAC can use a prepared message.
- Baseline
- Run the routine on at least 3 separate days in the setting where it will be measured before setting a target. Mark each step as independent, prompted (note the prompt type), or not done, and count only independent steps. Note the steps missed most often; they usually need direct teaching, not just more practice. Start with practice calls to a known adult; note any steps where a real receptionist's speed changes the result.
- Tips
- Real appointments make the best practice; ask the family which ones the student could make this year. Online booking is a fair alternative for students who find calls hard; see the portal goal.
- Limits
- Phone anxiety can look like a skill gap; if the student has the steps but avoids calls, a coping or self-advocacy goal may fit better.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a practice call to a staff member acting as a receptionist, with a script card and the student's calendar, the student will make the call, set a time that fits the schedule, and save the appointment in the calendar, performing at least 7 of 8 steps independently, on 3 consecutive calls, as measured by a task-analysis checklist collected every two weeks.

- Write the date at the top of each session column. Mark each step I, S, or N.
- Total the number of I marks for the session. The goal counts steps completed independently (target: 7 of 8).
- Use the least intrusive prompt first and record the prompt actually needed.
