Build a monthly budget from take-home pay
When to use this goal
For students who work or will soon, who can add and subtract with a calculator but have never planned where a paycheck goes. Present levels in math and reading decide fit, not grade; use income and costs that match the student's likely first adult budget.
- Baseline
- Give 2 or 3 short probes with real-looking documents at the student's reading level, allowing the calculator the student will use as an adult. Score each item right or wrong and note the error type (reading the document, choosing the operation, or calculation). Score each budget line (amount entered, category correct) and the final total.
- Tips
- Use the student's real pay when they have a job; it makes the budget theirs. Let the student choose flexible categories, such as hobbies or eating out. Follow with the tracking goals so the budget gets used.
- Limits
- Teaches a money skill; it does not recommend accounts, products, or financial choices, which belong to the student and family. A paper budget does not show spending follows it; pair with a spending log or bank app check.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a monthly take-home pay amount, a list of fixed and flexible expenses, a budget template, and a phone calculator, the student will fill in the budget so planned spending and saving equal the take-home pay independently with at least 90% accuracy on budget lines and totals, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 45% accuracy.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
