Find deposits and charges on a bank statement

When to use this goal

For students who have, or will soon open, an account and cannot read where money came in and went out. Present levels in reading tables and numbers decide fit, not grade.

Baseline
Give 2 or 3 short probes with real-looking documents at the student's reading level, allowing the calculator the student will use as an adult. Score each item right or wrong and note the error type (reading the document, choosing the operation, or calculation). Practice uses sample documents and practice or demo accounts only; the student's real PIN, passwords, and account numbers are never used or written down at school.
Tips
Include one charge the student would not recognize, so the lesson ends with what to do about it (ask, then call the bank).
Limits
Statement layouts vary by bank; practice with two or three layouts.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a sample one-month bank statement and 10 questions (a deposit date, a charge amount, the ending balance, a fee), the student will answer each question by finding the line on the statement independently with at least 85% accuracy on bank statement questions, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 45% accuracy.
