Find key boxes on a W-2 form

When to use this goal

For students who worked during the year and will receive a W-2 in January. Needs reading a dense form with support; present levels decide fit, not grade. Filing taxes stays with the family or a free tax help site.

Baseline
Give 2 or 3 short probes with real-looking documents at the student's reading level, allowing the calculator the student will use as an adult. Score each item right or wrong and note the error type (reading the document, choosing the operation, or calculation).
Tips
Teach that the W-2 is kept with important papers and given to whoever helps with filing. Free filing help sites can be part of a community-access trip.
Limits
Not tax advice and not a filing goal. Students with several jobs will have several forms.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a sample W-2 form and questions about wages, federal tax withheld, the employer, and the tax year, the student will find the box that answers each question and read the amount or name independently with at least 80% accuracy on W-2 questions, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks during tax season.

Baseline: 35% accuracy.
