Take notes on the main idea and key details of a short lecture
When to use this goal
For students who write nothing during instruction, copy slides word for word, or write so much that they lose the thread. Present levels should show the student can identify a main idea when listening; the goal targets recording it.
- Baseline
- Before each presentation, list the main idea and the key details (five to eight items) that a complete set of notes would contain. Score the student's notes against that list after two or three presentations. Note whether the student records details but misses the main idea, or writes only what is on slides.
- Tips
- Teach signal phrases (the main point is, there are three reasons) so the student knows when to write. Phrases, not sentences, keep up with speech. Recorded videos allow pausing during instruction; live presentations are the goal condition.
- Limits
- Presentation pace and clarity vary, which changes scores. Notes serve the student only if reviewed; this goal does not measure use. Students with slow handwriting may need typing or a template as a permanent support.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 10-minute teacher presentation or video with a stated topic, the student will write notes that record the main idea and at least four key details in words or phrases independently with at least 80% accuracy on key points in the presentation, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Written Expression.
Met: Level of support. Defined.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
