Annotate each source for a research paper

9-12Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For high school students who collect sources but cannot say what each one is about or how it helps the paper. Present levels should show the student can read or listen to the sources; the goal targets a short summary and a statement of use for each.

Baseline
Score annotations from a recent project, or give two sources and ask for annotations. An annotation is correct only if it has a citation, an accurate summary, and a stated use. Note which part is missing; a summary that only restates the title is common.
Tips
Annotated bibliographies are common in high school and college courses, so this goal has a long shelf life. Use the sources from the student's real assignments. Short practice sets of two sources can fill weeks between research projects.
Limits
Accuracy of the summary depends on comprehension. Few items per assignment make percentages jumpy; track the count too. The goal does not measure source selection.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given four sources for a research assignment and an annotated bibliography template, the student will write an annotation for each source that gives the citation, summarizes the main point in two or three sentences, and states how the source will be used in the paper independently with at least 75% accuracy on source annotations, on 2 consecutive research assignments, as measured by work-sample analysis collected per research assignment, at least monthly.

Baseline: 25% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Written Expression.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
