Compose a journal sentence on an AAC device

K-2, 3-5, PKOpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who communicate with a speech-generating device or a core-word board and are ready to put a message into writing rather than only speaking it. Present levels should show the student combines at least two symbols to communicate; the goal uses the same system to compose a written sentence.

Baseline
Over five journal sessions, record each message the student composes on the device, the number of words, and the prompt level used. Count a sentence when it has at least three words that relate to the photo; grammatical order is noted but not required at the start.
Tips
Plan with the SLP so the vocabulary needed for journaling is on the device and easy to reach. Print or write the message and read it back while pointing to each word. Keep the photos real and recent; students write more about events they lived.
Limits
Device layout changes affect performance; note any changes in the data. The goal measures composing, not spelling, unless the device has a keyboard page. Journal time must be protected or the opportunities disappear.

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during daily journal time, given a photo or drawing from a recent activity and the student's AAC device, the student will use the AAC device to compose a journal sentence of at least three words about the photo independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks of data, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Written Expression.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
