Build presentation slides with bullets and speaker notes
When to use this goal
For middle and high school students whose slide presentations are paragraphs pasted onto slides or pictures with no text. Present levels should show the student can write sentences on a topic; the goal targets condensing ideas into bullets and expanding them in notes.
- Baseline
- Score one recent slide presentation, each row 0 to 3. Note whether the student puts too much text on slides or too little anywhere. If no presentation exists, assign a short four-slide task.
- Tips
- Presentations come up in nearly every course; coordinate with content teachers to score one per month. Speaker notes are where the writing shows; students can read from them while presenting. Let the student choose design elements but keep scoring on the words.
- Limits
- Design and app skill can distract from the writing. Group presentations make it hard to score one student's work; score individual slides. The rubric does not score the oral presentation.

- Score each sample with a 12-point slide presentation writing rubric. Attach or reference the rubric's score descriptors.
- Use the same prompt type and conditions for each scored sample.
- If two people score, check agreement on a few samples before relying on the data.
