Rewrite a message for a different audience
When to use this goal
For students who write the same way for everyone, using casual language in formal tasks or missing what a reader needs to know. Present levels should show sentence and paragraph writing; the target is changing word choice, detail, and tone for a named reader.
- Baseline
- Give two rewrite tasks and score each row 0 to 3. Note whether the student changes only the greeting (a common first step) or also the body of the message.
- Tips
- Use messages students actually write: texts to friends, notes to teachers, emails to coaches. Talk about why the same idea sounds different to different readers. This goal supports later work on formal emails and job applications.
- Limits
- Judging tone takes scorer agreement; collect examples for each score point. Short messages give few chances to show change. Students learning English may need explicit phrase lists rather than judgment calls.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a short message the student wrote for a friend and a new audience (such as a teacher, a principal, or an employer), the student will rewrite the message for the new audience so that the greeting, word choice, level of detail, and closing fit that reader independently, earning a score of at least 7 out of 9 on a 9-point audience and purpose rubric, on 3 of 4 consecutive scored rewrites, as measured by a defined scoring rubric collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 3 out of 9 rubric points.
