Punctuate and capitalize the parts of a friendly or formal letter
When to use this goal
For students who are learning letter writing and leave out the date, greeting comma, or closing capital, or who are preparing to write real letters and cards. Present levels should show sentence-level conventions are mostly in place; the goal adds the format.
- Baseline
- Score two or three recent letters (or give two letter tasks) with five items each: date format, greeting with capital and comma, body paragraph indented or spaced, closing with capital and comma, signature. Note which parts are missing versus present but mispunctuated.
- Tips
- Real recipients (a pen pal, a guest speaker, a family member) make this worth doing. Email headers replace some parts; decide whether the goal covers paper letters, emails, or both and score accordingly. Score the body's content with a different goal.
- Limits
- Five items per letter give coarse scores; the mastery rule of three consecutive letters compensates. Letter formats vary (block versus indented); pick one. The goal does not cover what the letter says.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
