Check capitals and periods with a picture checklist

When to use this goal

For kindergarten through second grade students who know a sentence starts with a capital and ends with a mark but forget both while writing. Present levels should show the student can find a missing capital or period when an adult points to the sentence; the checklist moves that check to the student.

Baseline
Collect six writing samples and the checked versions. Count an opportunity as met when every sentence was checked and every missing capital and end mark was fixed. Fixes in colored pencil make this easy to see.
Tips
Use the same picture checklist the class uses. Checking with a colored pencil shows the fixes and makes the student proud of them. Do not expect young writers to find every error; the routine is the target.
Limits
The student may not know where sentences end, which limits end-mark fixes; pair with a sentence goal if needed. Short pieces give few chances. The checklist covers only basic conventions.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, after writing two or more sentences in a journal or writing folder, given a picture checklist (capital, spaces, end mark), the student will touch each sentence, check it against the picture checklist, and fix any missing capital or end mark independently in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks of data, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 6 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Capitalization, Punctuation & Grammar.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
