Italicize long works and quote short works
When to use this goal
For high school students who format all titles the same way, or not at all, in essays and works cited pages. Present levels should show correct title capitalization; the target is choosing italics (books, films, albums, websites) or quotation marks (articles, poems, songs, chapters).
- Baseline
- Score all titles in two or three recent essays or works cited pages. Correct means the right format and capitalization. A 12-item probe can supplement when essays name few titles.
- Tips
- The whole-or-part question (is it a whole book or a chapter in it?) decides most cases. Handwritten work uses underlining for italics. Citation generators format titles; check that the student can spot their errors.
- Limits
- Style guides differ in some cases (websites, TV episodes). The goal is narrow. Typed work makes italics easy; handwritten work needs underlining.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
