Lower errors in workplace emails and messages
When to use this goal
For transition-age students who write emails, texts, or messages to supervisors, teachers, or coworkers that contain enough errors to cause misunderstandings. Present levels should come from several real or practice messages scored per 100 words.
- Baseline
- Collect at least 200 words of messages (real with permission, or practice) and count errors of the four types, then convert to errors per 100 words. Note any errors that changed meaning; those matter most at work.
- Tips
- Use real workplace situations and, where possible, real messages the student sends. A short checklist before sending is a habit adults use. Pair with a goal for message content if the student leaves out key details.
- Limits
- Short messages give unstable rates; pool a week's messages. Text messages follow looser norms; agree on which messages count. Privacy matters; use messages the student agrees to share.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Capitalization, Punctuation & Grammar.
Met: Level of support. Defined.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per 100 words of sent messages.
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
