Cross out the sentence that does not belong
When to use this goal
For students who include off-topic sentences in their writing and do not notice them when rereading. Present levels should show the student can name the topic of a short paragraph; the probe isolates spotting the sentence that breaks it.
- Baseline
- Give two probes of eight paragraphs. Score a paragraph correct when the off-topic sentence is crossed out and the reason fits. Make the off-topic sentences related enough to require thought (about the same broad subject, not a different subject).
- Tips
- Move from teacher-made paragraphs to the student's own drafts once the probe is easy. The written reason shows whether the student is checking against the topic sentence or guessing.
- Limits
- Finding off-topic sentences in given paragraphs is easier than in one's own writing. Reading level affects scores; keep passages easy. The goal pairs with the existing staying-on-topic goal for own writing.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given eight short paragraphs that each contain one off-topic sentence, the student will cross out the sentence that does not fit the topic sentence and write a few words that explain why it does not belong independently with at least 90% accuracy on paragraphs, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Paragraph Organization.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
