Dictate complete sentences with speech-to-text and fix recognition errors

When to use this goal

For students who use speech-to-text but dictate in fragments or long run-ons and never check what the software wrote. Present levels should show oral sentences are complete; the goal targets producing them one at a time and correcting the result.

Baseline
Give two probes of 10 prompts. A sentence is correct when the final text is a complete sentence with no misrecognized words left. Save the raw output as well; the number of recognition errors the student noticed and fixed is the most informative number.
Tips
Teach the say-it-first routine so the student dictates a planned sentence. Voice commands for punctuation can be taught after sentences are reliable. Noisy settings change results; name a workable space in the condition.
Limits
Recognition accuracy depends on the student's speech and the software; consult the SLP for students with articulation differences. The goal does not measure composition beyond the sentence. Scores from different devices are not comparable.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 picture or question prompts and speech-to-text software, the student will dictate one complete sentence per prompt and correct any misrecognized words so that each sentence reads as intended independently with at least 85% accuracy on dictated sentences, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sentence Construction.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
