Map digraph and blend words in sound boxes

When to use this goal

For students who spell CVC words but break down when a word has a digraph (one sound, two letters) or a blend (two sounds, two letters), writing ship as sip or stop as sop. Present levels should show reliable CVC spelling; the goal targets matching each sound to its letters.

Baseline
Give two lists of 10 words with a mix of digraphs and blends. Score each word correct when every sound is spelled with the right letters. Also note sound-level errors (dropped blend letters, a digraph written as one letter) because they show which pattern to teach first.
Tips
Sound boxes make the difference between a digraph and a blend visible: a digraph shares a box, a blend uses two. Fade the boxes once the student segments easily. Use words from the current phonics lesson plus review words.
Limits
Boxed spelling is easier than spelling in sentences; check transfer in dictated sentences or writing samples. Speech sound differences can affect what the student hears; check with the SLP if errors follow a speech pattern. Ten words per probe give rough percentages.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 dictated words with digraphs or blends (such as chop, flag, thin, crust) and a sound-box strip for each word, the student will say each sound while pushing a marker into a box, then write the letters for each sound in its box, putting both letters of a digraph in one box independently with at least 85% accuracy on dictated words, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Curriculum-based measurement gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Spelling.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
