Keep the n or m in final blends

K-2, 3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who spell most blends but drop the nasal in final blends (jump as jup, went as wet, hand as had). The n and m are hard to feel in the mouth before another consonant. Present levels should show this specific pattern in writing samples or dictation.

Baseline
Give two lists of 12 words and score each word correct when fully spelled. Count nasal omissions separately; that count is the clearest measure of this pattern. Check journal samples for the same error.
Tips
Feeling the hum of n and m (a hand on the nose) helps students notice the sound. Mixed lists stop the student from adding a nasal to every word. Short, targeted probes fit at the start of a phonics lesson.
Limits
The goal targets one error pattern; it is narrow by design. Dialect differences can affect what the student hears. Spelling in sentences may lag behind lists.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 12 dictated words with final blends that begin with n or m (such as -mp, -nd, -nt, -nch), the student will write each word with every sound in the final blend, including the n or m independently with at least 85% accuracy on dictated words, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Curriculum-based measurement gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Spelling.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
