Check tricky words with a phone word list
When to use this goal
For high school students preparing for work or college who need a portable way to check words they often misspell when no spell-check is available (handwritten forms, whiteboards, quick notes). Present levels should show a personal tricky-word list exists or can be built.
- Baseline
- Set up or observe eight handwritten tasks that include words on the student's list. Record whether the student checks the list, asks someone, or writes the word from memory, and whether the word ends up correct.
- Tips
- Help the student set up the list in a way they will keep using (a pinned note, a contact card, a photo). This is an adult strategy many good writers use. Agree with the student on where phones are allowed for this purpose.
- Limits
- School phone policies may limit use; plan around them. Opportunities depend on handwritten tasks, which are less common than typed ones. The goal measures strategy use, not spelling knowledge.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when completing handwritten forms, notes, or messages in class, at a job site, or in the community, the student will open the personal word list on the phone and check each listed word before writing it independently in at least 6 of 8 opportunities, across 4 consecutive weeks of data, as measured by direct observation collected weekly.

- Record up to 8 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
