Dictate a journal sentence with voice typing

K-2, 3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young writers whose ideas run ahead of their handwriting or spelling, and who are starting voice typing. Present levels in oral sentence formation and speech clarity decide fit.

Baseline
Collect three dictated journal entries and compare the screen text with what the student meant. Note errors from mumbling, speaking too fast, or background noise.
Tips
Teach speaking in short phrases and pausing. A quieter spot or a headset microphone helps in busy rooms.
Limits
Voice typing accuracy depends on speech clarity and noise; students with speech sound needs may need another tool. The AT specialist and team choose the tool from an AT assessment and trial data; the template measures what the student does with it, not the tool's quality.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during journal writing, given a tablet with voice typing turned on and a picture prompt, the student will press the microphone, say a sentence clearly in phrases, stop the microphone, and check the words on the screen independently with at least 85% accuracy on dictated words transcribed as intended, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly writing samples, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.

Baseline: 50% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Assistive Technology Use.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.
