Hear whether a sentence is a question
When to use this goal
For students who discriminate words and are ready for intonation, telling questions from statements and noticing stressed words. Present levels in discrimination decide fit.
- Baseline
- Present 12 sentences, half questions and half statements, in random order. Chance is 50%, so look for scores well above it.
- Tips
- Intonation carries meaning in conversation (sarcasm, questions, emphasis). Tie the skill to real talk once it is reliable.
- Limits
- Pitch cues are hard to hear with some devices. The template measures listening for a student whose family chose listening as one route; it never replaces sign language or captions the student also uses.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given short spoken sentences that are the same words said as a question or a statement, with the speaker's mouth covered, the student will show whether each sentence was a question or a statement with a card or sign independently with at least 85% accuracy on sentences judged correctly, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 50% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Auditory Skills (Deaf & Hard of Hearing).
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
