Track a braille line from left to right

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young children who are blind or have low vision and are preparing to read braille. Fit depends on present levels from the learning media assessment and on the child's tactile exploration, not on age: some children track lines at 3, others need months of tactile play first.

Baseline
Present 10 lines across a session and record each as tracked to the end, lost and found again, or lost. Note finger pressure (light touch helps) and whether the child uses one or both hands, since both affect later reading.
Tips
Each line is one opportunity. Count it when the child reaches the end without lifting off the line. Keep sessions short and playful, and use real braille-ready materials so the skill carries into books.
Limits
Tracking is a readiness skill; it does not show letter recognition. Some children with additional disabilities need tactile objects and symbols before lines. The template does not decide the reading medium; the learning media assessment does.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a tactile worksheet of double-spaced raised lines, during a short TVI session, the student will independently move the fingertips of both hands along the line from the left margin to the end without lifting off the line in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected each TVI session.

Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Braille Literacy.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
