One-handed typing at a working rate

3-5, 6-8, 9-12Rate (per minute)TemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who type with one hand because of a physical difference, injury, or motor need, and who are learning a one-handed method with the hand centered on the keyboard. Present levels from OT assessment decide the method and keyboard.

Baseline
Time three passages with the student's current method and use the median. Watch for hand fatigue.
Tips
One-handed typists can reach useful rates; word prediction and shortcuts help. The OT chooses the keyboard and method.
Limits
Typing rate varies with the text, the keyboard, and fatigue; keep these the same across probes and compare the student with their own baseline.

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Count of correct responses per minute on a timed task.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a printed passage at an easy reading level, during a 3-minute timing (total divided by 3 for the per-minute rate), using a standard or one-handed keyboard, the student will type the passage with one hand from the one-handed home position independently at a rate of at least 12 correct words per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 5 correct words per minute.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Keyboarding & Computer Access.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
