Type a timed response to a reading
When to use this goal
For middle and high school students who answer text-based questions on computer-based tests and class assignments and run out of time typing. Present levels from timed typed responses decide the target.
- Baseline
- Use three timed responses and use the median. Separate planning time from typing time.
- Tips
- Answer quality is scored in writing goals; this measures typing output under time.
- Limits
- Typing rate varies with the text, the keyboard, and fatigue; keep these the same across probes and compare the student with their own baseline.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a short reading already completed and a written-response question, during a 5-minute typing timing (total divided by 5 for the per-minute rate), the student will type their response to the question for five minutes independently at a rate of at least 12 correct words per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 6 correct words per minute.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Keyboarding & Computer Access.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
