Turn toward and reach for a high-contrast object
When to use this goal
For young children with low vision, including children with cortical or cerebral visual impairment, who are starting to use vision to find objects. Present levels from the functional vision assessment decide the object, color, lighting, and distance that work.
- Baseline
- Use the functional vision assessment to choose the object and position. Present 10 times across a session and record whether the child turns toward the object, reaches, both, or neither, and how long it takes.
- Tips
- Wait time matters: some children need many seconds before they respond. Keep the background plain and the room quiet so vision is not competing with other input.
- Limits
- Responses can change with fatigue, seizures, medication, and the time of day; note these. The template does not assess vision; the functional vision assessment and the eye doctor do.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a preferred object in the child's best-seen color presented against a plain black or white background within reach, the student will turn their head or eyes toward the object and reach for it independently in at least 7 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each TVI session.
Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Low Vision & Visual Efficiency.
Met: Level of support. Defined.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
