Read labels and menus with a phone magnifier

9-12, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For older students with low vision who need to read price tags, menus, receipts, and labels in the community. Present levels in phone use and in the magnifier app decide fit.

Baseline
Plan six small-print reading moments and record whether the student used the phone, asked someone, or skipped the information.
Tips
Using the phone looks like what peers do, which many students prefer to a separate device. Asking a staff member is also a valid strategy; note it separately.
Limits
Lighting and phone battery affect use. The template does not cover reading long documents.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during community lessons at a store, restaurant, or pharmacy, with the student's phone, the student will open the magnifier or camera app, zoom and light the text, and read the needed information independently in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, across 3 consecutive community lessons, as measured by direct observation collected during each community lesson.

Baseline: 2 of 6 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Low Vision & Visual Efficiency.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
