Find the street edge at curb ramps

6-8, 9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For cane travelers on routes with curb ramps, where there is no step down to warn of the street. Present levels in cane technique and in feeling surface changes decide fit.

Baseline
Plan a route with six curb ramps and record each as stopped at the street edge, stopped late, or missed. Note ramps that have no warning surface.
Tips
Each ramp is one opportunity, and the target is every ramp. Ramps that point diagonally into the intersection can misalign the student; teach realigning after stopping.
Limits
Missing or worn warning surfaces make the task harder. The goal does not replace the O&M specialist's judgment about when the student is ready for a harder route or less supervision.

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when approaching an intersection with a curb ramp and detectable warning surface during an O&M lesson, the student will find the detectable warning surface or the slope change with the cane or feet and stop before the street independently in 6 of 6 opportunities, across 3 consecutive O&M lessons, as measured by direct observation collected during each O&M lesson.

Baseline: 3 of 6 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Orientation & Mobility.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
