Use a shoreline to stay on the sidewalk

6-8, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For cane users who drift off the sidewalk or into the street side. Present levels in two-point touch and touch-and-drag technique decide fit.

Baseline
Set five sidewalk segments or walkway searches and record each as stayed on the sidewalk or found the walkway, needed a cue, or drifted off.
Tips
Shorelining on the inside edge keeps the student away from the street. Teach touch-and-drag for finding branching walks.
Limits
Snow, leaves, and parked bikes hide shorelines. The goal does not replace the O&M specialist's judgment about when the student is ready for a harder route or less supervision.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when traveling a sidewalk with a grass line or building line on one side, the student will keep the cane tip touching the shoreline on each swing to that side and stay on the sidewalk independently in 5 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive O&M lessons, as measured by direct observation collected during each O&M lesson.

Baseline: 2 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Orientation & Mobility.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
