Read street signs with a monocular while traveling

When to use this goal

For travelers with low vision who use a monocular telescope to read signs, building numbers, and bus numbers. Present levels in monocular use at a desk decide fit; outdoor use with lighting changes is harder.

Baseline
Plan five signs on a route at different heights and distances and record each as read, read with a hint, or not found. Note lighting and glare.
Tips
Reading always happens while stopped, out of the walking path; this is part of the skill. Coordinate with the TVI, who teaches monocular skills at a desk (see visual-efficiency goals).
Limits
The monocular is not used while walking. Bright sun and moving targets are harder. The goal does not replace the O&M specialist's judgment about when the student is ready for a harder route or less supervision.

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during an O&M lesson on a business-area route with street signs and building numbers, the student will stop in a safe spot, find the sign with the monocular, focus it, and read the street name or number aloud independently in 5 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive O&M lessons, as measured by direct observation collected during each O&M lesson.

Baseline: 2 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Orientation & Mobility.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
