Remain in the assigned work area during independent work
When to use this goal
For students who wander the room, visit peers, or leave the work area during independent work. Measures the longest continuous time in the area. Base the choice on duration recording. Students who leave to move may need a movement break goal (replacement-behavior bh-rep-025) alongside.
- Baseline
- Time the longest stretch in the area during 5 work periods and count the number of exits. Decide what counts as leaving (both feet outside the boundary) and whether standing at the desk counts as staying; most teams allow it. Check that the work is at the instructional level and the period length is realistic.
- Tips
- Allow permitted exits (asking first) without stopping the clock if the team agrees; record them separately. Build in a scheduled break so the target is reachable, and give something to do when work is finished early. Pair with the reduction goal bh-cls-018 if out-of-seat counts are kept.
- Limits
- Time in the area does not mean time on task; use a sustained-attention goal for engagement. Flexible-seating classrooms need the area defined as the chosen spot for that period.

- Start timing when the defined behavior begins and stop when it ends, using the definitions agreed by the team.
- The goal is reached when duration is at least the target (15 minutes).
- Note interruptions that weren't caused by the student.
