Stay seated during whole-group instruction
When to use this goal
For students who get up repeatedly during lessons at desks or on the carpet. Measures continuous time seated. Base the choice on duration recording. Seating that allows movement (a wobble stool, a cushion) counts as seated.
- Baseline
- Record the longest continuous time seated and the number of times up during 5 lessons. Note the lesson type; many students sit longer for read-alouds than for direct instruction. Consult the OT about seating options before setting the target.
- Tips
- Define seated to include kneeling or sitting on heels if the team agrees; the goal is staying in the spot, not a posture. Plan a movement job (handing out papers) at the target time so sitting is followed by movement. Pair with the reduction goal bh-cls-018 if out-of-seat counts are kept, and with replacement-behavior bh-rep-025 for requesting movement.
- Limits
- Long targets (20 minutes or more) are not developmentally reasonable for many young students; set the target by the lesson length the class actually uses. Does not measure listening or participation.
