Sit in the circle for a preschool group activity

PKDurationTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For preschoolers who leave the circle, lie down across peers, or wander during group time. Measures continuous time in the circle spot. Base the choice on duration recording; a few minutes is a reasonable start for many 3-year-olds.

Baseline
Time the longest stretch in the spot during 5 circle times and note what pulled the student away (a toy in view, a peer, the activity type). Record whether an adult was seated behind the student, which usually lengthens the time and belongs in the support level.
Tips
Place the student near the teacher and the most active part of circle, keep the activities short, and let the student leave with a signal rather than scoring a quiet exit as failure. Participation (responding when named, doing the song actions) is bh-cls-006.
Limits
Circle times vary in length and interest; sample the same type each week. Sitting is not the point of preschool; if the circle is 25 minutes long, shorten the circle rather than raising the target.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a 10-minute circle time with a carpet square or name spot, the student will sit in the circle spot (seated on the square or in an adult's lap) independently for at least 8 minutes, on 4 of 5 consecutive recorded circle times, as measured by duration recording collected daily during circle time.

Baseline: 2 minutes.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Duration fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Duration recording gives duration data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Classroom Expectations & Routines.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
