Reduce leaving the seat without permission during lessons
When to use this goal
A reduction goal for students who leave the seat often during instruction or seated work. Base the choice on a count during a fixed period. Pair with bh-cls-003 or bh-cls-004 (staying in the area or seat) and with replacement-behavior bh-rep-025 (movement break) if movement is the function.
- Baseline
- Count exits from the seat during 3 to 5 lessons of the same length, noting where the student went (a peer, the pencil sharpener, the window). Destinations reveal the function: peers suggest attention, wandering suggests movement, the trash can every 3 minutes suggests escape from the task.
- Tips
- Only valid with a positive goal in place; graph break-card use or time in seat alongside exits. Permitted exits (asked and granted) are not counted. Seating that allows movement (standing desk, wobble stool) can be part of the plan and does not count as leaving.
- Limits
- Counts exits, not time away; a student who leaves once for 10 minutes scores well on this goal. Lesson type affects the rate; sample the same lesson each week.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 30-minute lesson with seated work and the movement-break card on the desk, the student will reduce leaving the seat without permission as defined in the plan (both feet away from the desk area without asking) to no more than 2 times per 30-minute lesson, with the movement-break card honored every time it is used, across 4 consecutive weekly data summaries, as measured by frequency recording collected 3 times per week during the same lesson, summarized weekly.
Baseline: 8 times per 30-minute lesson.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Classroom Expectations & Routines.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per 30-minute lesson.
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
