Answer when called on in an online class
When to use this goal
For students in live online or hybrid lessons who go silent, leave the screen, or answer late when called on, so they drop out of the lesson. Fit depends on observations of live sessions and the student's access (a working microphone, typing ability), not grade.
- Baseline
- Plan five calls per session for three sessions and score each: answered within about 10 seconds, answered late, or no response. Check access first; a muted or broken microphone, a shared device, or a noisy home makes silence a tech problem, not a behavior one.
- Tips
- Any mode counts: voice, chat, a reaction, or a typed emoji the class has agreed means yes or no. Warn the student before the call ("next question is for you") while the skill is new. A student who freezes when called on may prefer chat; that is a fine answer.
- Limits
- Requires reliable internet and a device; outages are not scored. Only measures responding when called on, not following along between calls. Camera use is not part of this goal and should not be required.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a live online lesson when the teacher calls on the student by name, the student will answer by unmuting and speaking, typing in the chat, or using a reaction button independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 4 consecutive live sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected 5 planned calls per live session.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
