Stop a preferred activity when the timer ends
When to use this goal
For students who keep playing, keep the tablet, or need the item removed when a preferred activity ends. Base the choice on what currently happens at the end signal. Works with any end signal the student can see or hear.
- Baseline
- Record 5 timed endings: stopped within 30 seconds, stopped after repeated prompts, or item removed by the adult. Note the item; screens are usually hardest, so keep the baseline and target by item type if they differ a lot.
- Tips
- Make the next activity worth moving to in the early weeks, and tell the student when the preferred activity comes back ("tablet again after math"). Score the first 30 seconds. Pair with replacement-behavior bh-rep-017 if the team wants the student to request more time; a granted extension resets the timer and the trial.
- Limits
- Preferred activities that end without a timer cannot be scored with this template. A student who stops but then protests for 10 minutes has met this goal; the protest belongs to a duration or replacement goal.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when a visual timer ends a preferred activity and the adult gives the stop direction once, the student will independently stop the activity and hand over or put away the item within 30 seconds without the defined problem behavior in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily at the end of 1 to 2 timed preferred activities.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
