Put away a preferred item on the first direction
When to use this goal
For older students who keep using a phone, headphones, or other item after being told to put it away, or who argue about it. Base the choice on logged directions. The school device policy should be clear and applied to all students.
- Baseline
- Ask each teacher to log 5 put-away directions: followed first time, followed after a second direction, or refused or argued. Note whether the direction was private or public and whether peers were using items; the rules must apply to everyone for the data to mean anything.
- Tips
- Private directions and a predictable storage spot do most of the work; a public direction is a different, harder trial and should be marked on the data sheet. Return items on a stated schedule so putting them away does not feel like losing them. Score the first 30 seconds.
- Limits
- Teacher logging is uneven; agree on a quick tally method. Students with a device as an accommodation (AAC, medical monitoring) are excluded from this goal for that device.

Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
