Follow a direction delivered on a device or by a job coach
When to use this goal
For high school students in work-based learning or community instruction who need to follow directions from a supervisor, a job coach, or a written task list on a device. Base the choice on the work site. Vocational task skills themselves belong to vocational-skills.
- Baseline
- Have the job coach tally the first 10 directions in 3 sessions: started within 30 seconds, started after a repeat, or did not start. Note whether directions were spoken, written, or on the device; many students do far better with one of these, and the plan should say which.
- Tips
- Agree with the work site on how directions will be given, and ask supervisors to give one at a time. Asking a question is part of the behavior. Pair with vocational-skills goals for the tasks themselves and with self-advocacy goals if the student needs to request a different format.
- Limits
- Work-site data depend on a coach being present; unobserved sessions have no data. Supervisors may give directions in ways the student cannot follow; the plan should address that before the student is judged.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
