Follow the bus driver's directions on the ride
When to use this goal
For students who ignore the driver's or bus aide's directions (sit down, move seats, quiet voice), which the driver cannot repeat while driving. Base the choice on the driver's report. The full bus routine is in safety-behavior bh-saf-019; this goal is the response to a direction.
- Baseline
- Ask the driver or aide to mark each direction for a week: followed within 10 seconds, followed after a repeat, or not followed. Note the seat; the back of the bus is harder to supervise and harder to hear from. If the driver gives directions by shouting over the engine, the plan should move the student forward before judging the data.
- Tips
- Transportation staff need the plan in writing and a data sheet that takes seconds. A front seat does most of the work. Reinforce at school after a good ride with the driver's note. Pair with safety-behavior bh-saf-019 for the full routine and bh-saf-024 for hands and feet on the bus.
- Limits
- The driver cannot observe and drive at once; an aide collects better data. Directions on the bus are usually about stopping something, so rates will be lower than in class.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during the bus ride when the driver or aide gives a one-step direction, the student will independently follow the driver's or aide's direction within 10 seconds without it being repeated in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly data summaries, as measured by direct observation collected daily, logged by the driver or aide on a one-line sheet, summarized weekly.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
