Respond to directions from community staff
When to use this goal
For older students on community-based instruction who follow school staff but ignore or argue with directions from a cashier, librarian, lifeguard, usher, or security guard. Fit depends on community outing data, not grade.
- Baseline
- Record every direction from a community staff member over three or four outings: followed, followed after the school adult repeated it, ignored, or argued. Note uniforms and settings; some students follow a lifeguard but not a cashier.
- Tips
- Score a direction as followed when the student starts it or asks a clarifying question within about 15 seconds. Teach who counts as staff (uniform, name tag, behind a counter) before the outing, using photos from the actual locations. The school adult should resist repeating the direction; that is the support being faded. Pair with community-safety goals for students who leave the group.
- Limits
- Outings are infrequent, so data build slowly. Some community directions are unclear or unreasonable; score only clear, reasonable directions and note others.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
