Ask for more time instead of refusing when an activity ends
When to use this goal
For students who refuse, cling to the device, or escalate when a preferred activity ends. The replacement teaches a negotiable request ("one more minute") that is sometimes granted. Base the choice on current responses to end signals. Transitioning on request itself is covered in following-adult-directions.
- Baseline
- Record 5 endings of preferred activities and the first response: request for more time, continued activity past the signal, protest with problem behavior, or stopped on their own. Note how long extensions currently run when adults give in, since the plan will need a fixed extension length.
- Tips
- Grant the request every time at first, with a fixed short extension and a second timer. Then grant it most of the time, so the student learns the request is worth making but not guaranteed. Pair with bh-rep-015 for the trials where the request is denied, and with a transition goal in following-adult-directions for stopping when the extension ends.
- Limits
- If extensions keep getting longer, the goal is teaching negotiation rather than tolerance; keep the extension fixed. Not a fit when the activity must end immediately for safety.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when the timer signals the end of a preferred activity (tablet, blocks, outdoor play), the student will ask for more time using the taught phrase or MORE symbol before continuing the activity past the signal independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily at the end of 1 to 2 preferred activities.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Replacement Behaviors.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
