Request a break from a family member at home or on an outing
When to use this goal
For students whose break request works at school and whose family wants to use it at home, in the store, or at family gatherings. Fits when the family has agreed to collect simple data and the school team has shared the card and the routine. Base the choice on family report.
- Baseline
- Ask the family to tally one routine for a week: break requested, problem behavior, or neither. Agree on which precursors count and where the break spot is at home and in the car. Keep the data sheet to one line per day so it actually gets filled in.
- Tips
- Use the same card and phrase as school. Families honor every request at first, with a short timed break, and then shorten or delay breaks only after the school team has done so. Outings start short and preferred. Pair with bh-rep-013 (waiting) for the moment when a break is not possible, such as in a checkout line.
- Limits
- Family data are self-reported and uneven; treat them as a second data source, not the primary one for the IEP. Home routines differ from school demands, so progress may not transfer in either direction without planning.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, at home during a non-preferred routine (homework, bath, clean-up) with the break card in a fixed spot, the student will request a break from the family member using the card or taught phrase before the defined problem behavior independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly family data summaries, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily at home during one routine, summarized weekly by the family.

Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Replacement Behaviors.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
