Request a quieter space when noise becomes too much
When to use this goal
For students who cover their ears, shout, or leave when the room is loud (group work, the cafeteria, assemblies), and whose plan offers a quieter spot or headphones. Base the choice on loud-setting observations. The OT may help identify the noise triggers.
- Baseline
- Observe 5 loud periods and record each sign of overload and the response: requested, left without telling, shouted, or stayed and escalated. Ask the student which settings are hardest and what helps. Set up the quiet space and headphones before collecting data so the request has something to get.
- Tips
- Honor every request and never treat the quiet space as a consequence. Headphones can be the first option so the student stays in the room. Pair with bh-rep-010 for returning and with classroom-expectations bh-cls-024 for assemblies. Sensory needs are real; the goal is a request that keeps the student safe and in control, not more tolerance of noise.
- Limits
- Overload signs vary by student and some are internal; the plan should list the visible ones. Does not fit a student who needs a different placement for noise reasons; accommodations come first.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a loud classroom period (group work, indoor recess) when the student shows a defined sign of overload (covering ears, rocking, raised voice), the student will independently request the quieter space or headphones using the taught phrase or pass before shouting, covering ears for more than 30 seconds, or leaving without telling an adult in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive 2-week data summaries, as measured by direct observation collected each observed sign of overload, summarized every 2 weeks.

Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Replacement Behaviors.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
