Take a written promise for a later turn

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students whose FBA hypothesis is access to a tangible (a device, a ball, a seat) and who grab, refuse, or escalate when told it is not available now. Fit depends on the FBA and on whether the student can read or match a simple card, not grade.

Baseline
Record five times the item is unavailable: what the student did and how long it took to calm. Start with short delays (5 minutes) and keep every promise exactly; a broken promise resets the skill.
Tips
Promises must be kept on time, every time. Let the student hold the card. Lengthen delays slowly. Pair with bh-rep-016 (accepting an alternative) for times the item truly is not coming back.
Limits
Requires adults to track and honor promises; a shared visual timer helps. Not a fit when access to the item would be unsafe.

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when the student asks for or reaches for a preferred item that is not available now and the adult writes a promise card ("computer at 10:30"), the student will take the promise card, put it in the agreed place, and return to the current activity independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 consecutive school days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected each time a preferred item is unavailable, summarized weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Replacement Behaviors.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
